About Us

I am writing a book about our trip. Part of it is below. When you and your friends and I and my brother go to Italy, there could be a book about your trip too. If you would like to talk about this e-mail me. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. greg@mybrothersitaly.net.
Here is some of the book:

Sarah was the photographer as far as the two of us were concerned. We had the same ideas about what to put on the film. We have some monuments and basilicas but we have more pictures of a red budding flower pot set in a niche in a wall of a back street trattoria or a piece of marble relief in the overhang of a chocolate shop, or an older couple taking a leisurely walk holding a cane in one hand and holding hands with the other. These were the real sights, real Rome and real Romans. A beautiful lady, thirty perhaps, light green dress, long dark hair, holding the arm of a distinguished Mediterranean gentleman, a little gray at the temples. They ate gelatos and stopped to talk with kids in shorts and T-shirts and old sneakers playing soccer in the street. Real Rome passing by without pretense.

Like the boy coming home from Mulberry Street, I could tell you our walk to Trevi Fountain was uneventful, or I could tell you I held hands with Sarah in the street where Caravaggio flirted with Roman boys and Roman women flirted with Caravaggio. We all bought gelatos where Buonarotti bought bread each morning, and an old lady hung laundry on the porch of a building with 1545 carved in Roman numerals in its fascia. To walk through Rome is always an event. Its friendly people always make it enjoyable. We did not see Rome; we absorbed Rome because of the long walks Tom led us on and the streets he chose for our adventures. If there are more Italian voices on the streets than tourist voices, you are really seeing Italy. I came to think of it as Tom's Italy, my brother's Italy. It is quickly becoming my Italy and Sarah's.
